Roughly 500 words about how the investigation can play out.

The Creature

Describe the creature, with needed information, to the tune of 150ish words.

Here is an example from the base game:

The Mothman

There is something odd going on in Point Pleasant West Virginia...and it’s not the first time.

The Instigating Event

CCC agents have come across a reported sighting of the Mothman. It is the first time in some years that it has been seen. Every spate of sightings in the past has ended in catastrophe they say...so act fast. We don’t need another 2008 on our hands.

The report says that a married couple, Gerald and Opal Williams were out fishing in the TNT area near Point Pleasant, when a creature swooped so low that they had to jump out of their boat to get away. Talking with them will be the first step.

The Investigation

The investigation should center around two locations:

Point Pleasant is a city of about 4,300. It is home to the Mothman Museum, and almost any relevant records you would need to look at, if you can gain access. The harder part than finding records will be sorting actual useful information from the massive amount of content.

The TNT Area (Now called the McClintic Wildlife Management Area if you want to be accurate and fancy): This 3,600 acre area was once a munitions dump for the army during WWII. It is also where the bulk of sightings have come over the years. It is now a wildlife area, but many of the munitions bunkers (some still with munitions in them) are still around.

Gerald and Opal will be difficult to get to talk, as they are tired of dealing with questions. They will eventually give up the location of the pond in the TNT area they were at, if the players don’t push too hard. They have some real backbones, if pushed.

Talking with local police and the like will reveal a few more sightings, all in the TNT area, mostly by campers. They also report having already talked to men in black suits. Everyone assumes them to be federal agents. You know that no federal agents (besides you) are at all involved.

Following up with other sightings doesn’t reveal much except for the Dream.

The Dream: Almost everyone interviewed, if pressed, will mention having very strange dreams. The common feature is a set of red, fiery headlights that then morph into the eyes of the mothman. There is also the sound of a large engine. Some say it sounds like a train, others an 18 wheeler, and one even says a helicopter.

At some point hit them with the phone call.

The Phone Call: One of the players will get a phone call from a man named Mr. Cold. He tells the player ‘17 in Boston.’ A search reveals that the next day 17 people die in a pileup on the interstate in Boston.

At night, out in the TNT zone they begin to see moving lights in the sky. These UFO’s are like nothing they have seen. Could they be aliens? Or just light phenomenon?

A second call from Cold says ‘In 23, 59 on 72.’ There is a Highway 72 near Point Pleasant. The next day is Friday, and it is football season. The local highschool has an away game, and are busing to it. If they do not figure this out, then one of the two buses will wreck, killing all 59 on board as it goes over a cliff side.

Either way, all Mothman activity stops after this event.

At least in Point Pleasant.

The Creature

The Mothman is not a catch-able creature. As the players investigate, they should be led to believe that whatever it is, it likely has some sort of ties to aliens. Also, that it is predicting a disaster.

The goal should be not to catch this thing, but to figure out what the disaster is, and prevent it from happening. CCC records will indicate much of the above.

The Men in Black are an absolute mystery that has plagued the CCC. Those in charge consider them a rival agency, another off the books organization… but the field agents are all convinced that they are supernatural beings, not human at all.

Dr. Pamela Blake

Analytical Biologist

With a degree from Harvard in Wildlife Biology, Dr. Drake started her career studying bear populations in the North Western U.S. It was on one of her long term studies that she encountered something that she never thought real: a Bigfoot. She attempted to write an academic paper on the topic, but the CCC got to her first. Now she tries to understand the biology of creatures of myth.

Personality:

A meticulous thinker, analyzing every detail before making decisions. Her calm demeanor and logical approach to problem-solving make her a trusted adviser among most of the teams she is assigned to. She struggles when having to make hard choices when there is little data to draw on.
